A big part of my patriotism is a respect of the founding fathers. I think they did a lot of good and all that we are as a nation was started by them so they deserve a lot of respect. At one time I thought they were great and they made America great because they were willing to fight for something out of the norm. They were willing to change the way things were done. But I failed to realize the rest of the greatness behind them. They did not found America on principles of rebellion and change. They rebelled and changed based upon what was right. And they also understood that all good and right comes from God. Hence the motto - in God we trust. And for all the atheists or whatever - ists that have a problem with that I say that that is still our motto. If for some it means that in whatever is right and good we trust then fine. But there is right and good. And there is wrong and bad. And in our "freedom" may we still remember that our nation is not great because everyone can do whatever they want. It is because the majority of the people, from the founding fathers on are trying to do what is right and good. And whether we believe in God (which is right and good) or not, our founding fathers new that faith was the power that got them where they are.
Last thing: the third verse of the star spangled banner. Sing it out loud!!!
O thus be it ever when free men shall stand
Between their loved homes and the wars desolation.
Blessed with victory and peace may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must when our cause it is just!
And this be our motto, "In God is our trust!"
And the star-spangled banner - o long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
I love that the last two lines are posed as a question in the first verse. To me it asks not only if the flag is still waving but if the land it is waving over is still the land of the free and the home of the brave. Is it? Well, you're the one who lives here!
Happy Memorial Day!!!
